The Channel, Boston - Dumptruck, Turbines, Hoodoo Gurus
My second show at the Channel. This must have been a Big Time Records showcase, as all three bands on the bill were signed to the label. Dumptruck was touring on D is for Dumptruck, Hoodoo Gurus had just released Mars needs guitars!, and Turbines had Last dance before highway out.
I became a big fan of Dumptruck after their second LP, Positively Dumptruck came out. For the country is great, too. I wasn't too familiar with the Turbines, straight-up rock 'n' roll as I recall. Hoodoo Gurus was the draw here because I liked some songs from the first LP, Stoneage Romeos - particularly "I want you back" and "Tojo". WFNX was playing "Bittersweet" a lot that fall. The success of Mars led to the Gurus getting signed to Elektra. They were dropped after one LP (Blow your cool!), then it was on to RCA for a while. They never really got it back after that.
Mars was rereleased in Australia this year with 5 bonus tracks. The first three Dumptruck LPs were all rereleased with bonus tracks last year.
There's a reason why Dumptruck never made it big - they were practically sued out of existence by Big Time (not Dick Cheney). Read all about it here.
Hoodoo Gurus website - they're still around!
Turbines on GEMM and one of their songs at Little Hits. And they get a mention at Rock In Boston.
Hoodoo Gurus on GEMM, HG imports with bonus tracks are also available at a good price on Siren Disc and The Ideal Copy.
